Oakland house was built in 1853 by L. A. Benoist as his summer home. Benoist was a friend of Henry Shaw – he commissioned George I. Barnett to design Oakland House.  (George I. Barnett designed Shaw’s Tower Grove House and the Missouri Governor’s Mansion in Jefferson City.)

The limestone for Oakland House was quarried on the property.  The walls in the house are 24 inches thick and the ceilings are 12 feet tall.  There is a free-standing walnut staircase.  And Oakland is topped with a watch tower.
